Wheel Rim

A wheel rim (also called a steering wheel or simply "rim") is the component you hold and interact with while sim racing. It attaches to the wheelbase via quick release and includes the grip, buttons, paddle shifters, and sometimes displays.

Wheel Rim Components

Grip surface: The outer ring you hold. Materials vary from rubber to leather to alcantara (suede-like material).

Paddle shifters: Mounted behind the wheel for up/downshifts. Length, feel, and build quality vary significantly.

Buttons and encoders: For in-game functions like pit limiter, MFD controls, radio, etc. Higher-end rims have more buttons.

Display (optional): Some rims include screens showing telemetry, gear, RPM, or other data.

Quick release adapter: The hub that connects to the wheelbase QR system.

Wheel Rim Shapes

Round (GT/Road): 280-320mm diameter, traditional round shape. Best for touring cars, GT racing, drifting. Allows hand-over-hand turning.

Formula/Open wheel: Flat-bottomed or rectangular, 260-280mm. Matches open-wheel car aesthetics. Limited rotation range (around 360°).

Deep dish: Round with offset (the grip sits further from the mounting point). Popular for drifting.

Button plate/Box style: Square-ish plates with grips, optimized for many buttons. Common in endurance racing.

Wheel Rim Ecosystem Lock-in

Most wheel rims only work with their brand's wheelbase:

• Fanatec rims → Fanatec bases only (QR1/QR2)
• MOZA rims → MOZA bases (MOZA QR)
• Thrustmaster rims → Thrustmaster bases (various attachments)
• Simucube/VRS → Use standard bolt patterns, more third-party options

This lock-in is a major consideration when choosing a brand.

Price Ranges

Budget ($50-$150):

• Basic shapes, plastic construction, minimal buttons
• Often included with wheelbase bundles

Mid-range ($150-$350):

• Better materials, more buttons, alcantara grips
• Fanatec standard rims, MOZA offerings

Premium ($350-$700+):

• Replica designs (BMW, McLaren, Ferrari)
• Integrated displays
• Metal construction, premium materials

High-end ($700+):

• Exact replicas or licensed designs
• High-resolution displays
• Carbon fiber, professional-grade

Choosing a Wheel Rim

Match your racing: GT racing → round rim. Formula → open-wheel rim. Variety → consider a compromise or multiple rims.

Button needs: Count the in-game functions you use. Encoders are great for scrolling through menus.

Diameter: Smaller rims feel quicker; larger rims offer more leverage. 300mm is a common compromise.

Weight: Heavier rims require more torque to feel responsive. Match to your wheelbase capability.
