Direct drive refers to a wheelbase design where the electric motor connects directly to the steering shaft without any mechanical intermediary like gears or belts. This direct connection eliminates play, reduces latency, and allows the motor's torque to transfer instantly to your hands.

How Direct Drive Works

In a direct drive wheelbase, the steering shaft is essentially an extension of the motor's rotor. When the motor receives a signal to apply torque, that force is immediately felt at the wheel rim. There's nothing in between to absorb, delay, or filter the feedback.

This contrasts with gear drive (where gears multiply motor rotation) and belt drive (where a belt connects motor to shaft). Both alternatives introduce some mechanical "play" and filtering.

Why Direct Drive Matters

Instant response: The force feedback reacts to in-game physics with minimal delay—typically under 1 millisecond.

Detailed feedback: Without mechanical filtering, you feel subtle details: tire slip, road texture, weight transfer, and the exact moment of understeer or oversteer onset.

High torque capability: Direct drive motors can produce 5Nm to 25Nm+ of torque. Higher torque means stronger forces when needed, and more headroom for detail at lower torque settings.

Durability: Fewer moving parts means less wear over time. Direct drive bases are known for longevity.
